As we all know, redstone clock and hopper are banned. Probably something more too. For the first one, redstone clock, it doesn't surprise me that it is banned. This isn't a 10 person server. It's a extensive 2000+ person server. It can be allowed provided that the user light it up correctly. Lagginess is mostly due to light level updates instead of tick calculations. It's the second one, hopper, that really shocked me. I asked and the response I got was, it induced a lot of lagginess. Hopper is too useful, many public mob farm are running at a lost, and many contraptions rely on hopper to use. So I went into research and dug deep. And what I found is 1) Hopper updates can be set by Spigot (under server setting), which can reduce the amount of hopper updates. This means that hopper clock will not work reliably, but it's better than nothing. A setting of 60 (3s) even 100(5s) ticks can be annoying, but nonetheless usable. 2) Hopper update can be nerfed by placing a block on top, or something with an inventory. By up to 80%. However this is user dependent and cannot be relied on. The community, and me personally, is hoping that hopper can be unbanned, even though they are a major lag inducer, but with appropriate setting, hopper lag can be reduced drastically. Source of info: Link 1 Link 2 Link 3 Link 4 I understand I do not have any sort of control over the server, but I will try to do my best to let the admins and owner understand how the server can be improved.
survival has tried having nerfed hoppers enabled but failed awfully bad due to the insane amount of hoppers being used for mob farms causing severe level lag that made the survival server not very playable.
Well they nerfed it to 20 ticks (1 sec), but further nerfing can be done, plus, I believe online mods, helper and admin can help look out for the players who are irresponsible in managing hoppers. This means item sorting will still not be allowed, but who needs item sorting anyway? Hopper timer will also be unreliable, but that's okay for me.
I think it is worthwhile to try adding the hoppers even if they are more nerfed than before... Or finding a way to limit their use buy making them extremely expensive or adding them only to voteshops of bigger ranks... or something like that.
Limiting hopper to higher ranks will create an outrage However limiting the amount of hoppers in a single chunk isn't very viable, unless item sorting and long item transportation are banned, then it will become reasonable. I personally don't mine if hopper updates every 5 seconds Edit: The thing is, hopper is very useful even in small amounts, but if you are talking about mob farm, they still need mass quantity of hopper, a problem which needs further clarification.
I am Not that sure KohGeek. You can use some water to redirect all items from different floors to ground level and use only 1 hopper then(clearlag may be bad then),or you may use a hopper like at 2 floors. A good hopper limiter is laggclear.Check the settings AxEd.Also, limiting the hoppers per level looks as a good idea @aXed
Adding hoppers back to survival will be great but at the same time bad. With hoppers, people tend to mass make potions or collect mobs drops easily. I agree hopper are useful, but for the economy.. they were removed.
Well, automation is what redstone about though. Why not collect mob drops? I feel bad for people in the nether who open their mob farm at a loss.
This is how other servers do it. Plugins to limit hoppers per 4-chunk area (commonly 16 are allowed).
